Trial Lawyers Tell Stories.
Appellate Lawyers Fix Errors.

Most criminal defense attorneys focus on juries and reasonable doubt. Once a verdict is read, their job is often done. But for us, that's where the work begins.

Forensic Record Review

We don't just "retry" the case. We dissect the trial transcripts line-by-line to find procedural errors, misconduct, and constitutional violations that the jury never saw.

The "Lawyer's Lawyer"

Other trial attorneys hire J.D. Lloyd to handle their appeals. Why? Because appellate law is a completely different skill set requiring intense research and written persuasion.

Federal & State Reach

Whether your case was in a Alabama Circuit Court or Federal District Court, we understand the distinct rules, deadlines, and precedents of each jurisdiction.

Time is Your Enemy

Appeals and Habeas Corpus petitions have strict statutes of limitations. Missing a deadline by even one day can bar you from relief forever. Do not wait to have your case reviewed.

Common Questions About Appeals

Is it too late to appeal my conviction?

Deadlines for post-conviction relief are strict and unforgiving. In Alabama State Court, you must file your notice of appeal within 42 days of either sentencing, or the denial of any post-trial motions you file. In Federal criminal cases, the Notice of Appeal is due within 14 days. If you have missed these windows, you must act quickly to explore other post-conviction options.

How much does an appeal cost?

Every case is unique based on the length of the trial record and the complexity of the issues. We offer a free initial consultation to understand your situation, and we provide transparent fee structures before any work begins.

Can you help if I already lost my first appeal?

Yes. If your direct appeal was denied, you may have grounds for an Alabama Rule 32 Petition or a Writ of Habeas Corpus. These challenge the legality of your detention, often based on ineffective assistance of counsel, newly discovered evidence, or constitutional violations.
